Previous experience with professional development
I enjoy being involved in professional development for students of all ages, especially events that are tailored to groups systematically excluded from STEM careers. I'm particularly interested in focusing on scientific communication skills, in order to improve communication between academics and their colleagues, their students, and the public.
Professional development in the field
While managing the Barton Group field season, I organized various activities for the team of junior scientist volunteers:
Dessert with Discussion seminars (a knock-off of the wonderful series at Kellogg Biological Station!)
Careers in science fireside chat
Rainy-day research symposium
Planoles, Spain, summer 2019
Student Representative: EEBB Program Retreat Planning Committee
Managed a departmental survey that determined the retreat agenda
Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior Program, Michigan State University, fall 2015
Student Representative: EEBB Program Faculty Search and Hiring Committee
Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior Program, Michigan State University, 2014-2015
Chair: Professional Development Committee for Graduate Women in Science
Organized a workshop on ePortfolios: Creating a Professional Web Presence
Organized a workshop on conflict management and negotiation, tailored to women in STEM fields
Organized 2-3 informal networking events per semester for GWIS members
Michigan State University, Sep 2012-May 2013
Mentor for NSF GRFP Application Workshop
Plant Biology Department, Michigan State University, Oct-Nov 2012 and 2013
Co-organizer for Plant Biology Graduate Student Retreat on Scientific Communication
Michigan State University, Apr 4, 2012
Presentations
Baskett, C.A. (2012) The undergrad research experience: why and how. MSU Undergraduate Plant Biology Club. 19 March: East Lansing, MI.
Baskett, C.A. (2012) Oral presentations workshop. MSU Plant Biology Graduate Student Retreat. 4 April: East Lansing, MI.

Science outreach and journalism
My research career and journalism hobby started at the same time. When I was an undergrad at Rice University, I listened to podcasts while staring at flowers for hours recording pollination. They inspired me to start and manage a weekly news magazine show on KTRU, Rice Radio. Since then I've enjoyed being involved in a variety of outreach and science communication activities.
